Embroidered communist patches to personalise a jacket

The patch has one advantage the sticker will never have: it gets sewn, it gets pressed, it stays. How do you apply an iron on patch without ruining it?

Work on a hard surface, not on a soft ironing board. Place the patch where you want it, cover it with a thin cotton cloth, then press a good hot iron without steam for around twenty seconds, bearing down firmly. Let it cool completely before handling. On a garment that will be washed often, a few stitches around the edge secure it for the long run. Avoid the iron on technical fabrics and fine synthetics.

What do you combine your revolutionary patches with?

A denim jacket or a bomber takes several patches without trouble, as long as you keep a hierarchy: one large patch on the back, two or three smaller ones on the sleeves. What do the embroidered Soviet insignia represent?

Many of them take up official emblems: the arms of a republic, the insignia of a unit, the badge of a space programme. Their visual vocabulary was fixed at the moment the Soviet Union was founded.
