Privacy policy

Last updated: 31 October 2026

This policy explains how Communist Universe collects and uses your personal data when you visit communist-universe.com, place an order or contact us, and how you can exercise your rights.

1. Data controller

The data controller is Maxime Perrin, sole trader operating the Communist Universe shop, 55 Rue Grignan, 13006 Marseille, France, who can be contacted at contact@communist-universe.com. The shop is hosted by Shopify.

2. Data we collect

  • Contact details: name, billing and delivery addresses, email address and phone number.
  • Order and payment information: items purchased, amount, payment method and payment confirmation. Your full card details are processed by our payment providers, never by us.
  • Account information: login, password and preferences.
  • Your communications with us: messages sent to customer service and reviews you publish.
  • Browsing data: IP address, device and browser type and pages viewed, collected in particular through cookies.

We collect this data directly from you, automatically when you browse, or from our service providers, for example for payment and delivery.

3. Purposes and legal bases

  • Processing and delivering your orders, handling returns and answering your requests: performance of the contract.
  • Managing your customer account: performance of the contract.
  • Sending you our offers by email or text message: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. If you are already a customer, we may write to you about similar products unless you object.
  • Measuring website traffic and showing you personalised advertising: your consent.
  • Preventing fraud and securing the website and payments: our legitimate interest.
  • Complying with our legal obligations, in particular accounting and tax obligations: legal obligation.

4. Recipients

Your data is never sold. It may be shared, solely for the purposes above, with:

  • Shopify, which hosts the website and provides the shop platform;
  • our payment providers, such as Shopify Payments, PayPal or Klarna;
  • our carriers and logistics partners;
  • our email, customer review and analytics tools;
  • our advertising partners, if you have agreed to this;
  • public authorities, where required by law.

5. Our relationship with Shopify

Shopify processes the information needed to run the shop. For certain enhanced features, which rely on your interactions with our shop and with other merchants, Shopify acts as a separate data controller. To find out more, see Shopify's consumer privacy policy and the Shopify privacy portal, where you can exercise your rights with Shopify.

6. Transfers outside the European Union

Some providers, including Shopify, may process your data outside the European Union, in particular in Canada and the United States. These transfers are protected by appropriate safeguards: a European Commission adequacy decision or standard contractual clauses (and, for UK residents, the equivalent UK mechanisms).

7. Retention periods

  • Orders and invoices: 10 years, to meet our accounting obligations.
  • Customer account: until it is deleted, or 3 years after your last activity.
  • Marketing: 3 years after your last purchase or contact, or until you unsubscribe.
  • Cookies: 13 months maximum.

8. Cookies

The website uses cookies that are necessary for it to work (basket, language, security) and, with your consent, analytics and advertising cookies. You can accept or refuse the latter in the banner shown on your first visit, change your choices on the Your privacy choices page or adjust your browser settings.

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it, depending on where you live, as a request to opt out of sharing your data for advertising purposes.

9. Your rights

Under the GDPR (and the UK GDPR for UK residents), you have the following rights:

  • the right of access to your data;
  • the right to rectification;
  • the right to erasure;
  • the right to restrict processing;
  • the right to object, in particular to direct marketing;
  • the right to data portability;
  • the right to withdraw your consent at any time.

To exercise them, write to us at contact@communist-universe.com or at the address above. We may ask you to prove your identity and will reply within one month. You can also unsubscribe from our emails at any time using the link in each email.

Depending on where you live, for example in some US states such as California, you may have additional rights, including the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your data for advertising purposes, which you can exercise on the Your privacy choices page. We do not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

If you believe your rights have not been respected, you can lodge a complaint with the French data protection authority, the CNIL (www.cnil.fr), or with the authority in your country (list of European authorities). In the United Kingdom, this is the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).

10. Children

The website is not intended for children. We do not knowingly collect data about children under 15 (or under the age of digital consent in your country). If you believe a child has sent us their data, please write to us and we will delete it.

11. Security

We take appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data, and all transactions are encrypted. As no transmission over the Internet is completely secure, please avoid sending us sensitive information through unsecured channels.

12. Changes

We may update this policy, for example to reflect changes in our practices or in the law. The date of the last update is shown at the top of this page.

13. Contact

For any question about this policy or your data, write to us at contact@communist-universe.com or by post at 55 Rue Grignan, 13006 Marseille, France.
