Communist stickers to mark everything lying around

A laptop, a water bottle, a hard hat, a letterbox, a notebook, the underside of a skateboard: the sticker is the cheapest militant accessory and the fastest to apply. Our aisle gathers the symbols that work at small size: five pointed red star, hammer and sickle, the CCCP initials in Cyrillic, stylised portraits, short slogans, flags of the Soviet era, reworked logos.

Sold singly or in sheets depending on the model, with hard wearing finishes designed to take rubbing and damp.

Where should you stick your revolutionary decals?

Smooth, non porous surfaces hold best: glass, painted metal, hard plastic, a phone case, bodywork. Raw wood and limewashed walls cause more trouble, with the sticker lifting at the corners. Clean and dry the surface before applying, push the bubbles out from the centre, then leave it to settle for a few hours before exposing the object to water. On a laptop, a compact design beats a large flat block that will curl at the hinge.

What other small formats work in the same spirit?

To move from stuck to worn, communist pins clip onto a jacket or a bag and get collected the same way. Embroidered communist patches, iron on or hook and loop, offer a longer lasting textile version. And if the Che is all you are after, Che Guevara stickers are dedicated to him. The full aisle is on the communist accessories page.

Why do these designs work so well at small size?

Because they come from a graphic tradition built to be read fast and from a distance: few colours, simple shapes, violent contrasts. That is exactly what a five centimetre decal needs. Our article on propaganda in the USSR looks back at this visual grammar and at the artists who set it down.
