Russian hat or ushanka: what’s the difference?
“Russian hat” and “ushanka” often refer to the same winter hat with ear flaps. The distinction comes from Russian vocabulary: shapka (шапка) is a general word for a hat, while ushanka (ушанка) specifically describes a style with flaps that cover the ears. Depending on the design, these flaps can be secured on top of the head or lowered and fastened under the chin to protect the ears from cold and wind. When choosing yours, check the length of the ear flaps, the fastening system, the lining and the head circumference in centimetres. Two ushankas that look similar may fit differently, so check the size range on each product page, even when a hat is labelled “one size”.
What size hat to choose?
Most models are available in 55-60 cm, and several references offer specific sizes from 56 to 62 cm. It is better to measure your head circumference at the forehead, passing above the ears, before choosing. Faux fur avoids any animal material and keeps you warm without weighing you down. In terms of colors, gray, black, navy blue and steel blue dominate, with a few brown, beige or red models. The red star, the double-headed eagle or the Soviet badge can be chosen depending on the register you want to display.

The models with removable mask are the most protective and the most demonstrative, the simple versions with badge go better in the city on a daily basis. For less extreme temperatures, communist hats mesh are easier to wear, and the communist caps suitable for spring. The complete radius of communist accessories allows you to compose the outfit around the chapka.
