Communist cushion covers to wake up a sofa

It is the cheapest and fastest decorating change there is: you slide a new cover onto an existing cushion and the room changes tone in a minute. Our aisle gathers the motifs of communist and Soviet iconography at cushion scale: centred red star, hammer and sickle, the CCCP initials in Cyrillic characters, cropped propaganda posters, portraits of leaders, constructivist compositions in red and black.

Standard square sizes on most models, with a hidden closure. Cushion pads are not included, which lets you keep your own.

Which cushion cover size should you choose?

Measure the cushion you own, not the cover currently on it. For a taut, plump result, take a cover the same size as the cushion, or even a centimetre under: a cover that is too big sags and makes soft creases at the corners. On a three seater sofa, three 45x45 cm cushions work better than two large ones, and let you mix the motifs.

How do you build a revolutionary living room without overload?

Alternate a strong motif with a calm one. Che Guevara cushion covers bring the portrait, Stalin cushion covers round out the series of historical figures, and the purely graphic motifs provide the breathing space between the two. On the wall, a communist poster answers the cushions without repeating them. In the bedroom, communist bedding sets continue the same line. The rest of the aisle is on the communist accessories page.

Why do these motifs hold the square format so well?

Because twentieth century Soviet art worked hard on centred composition and frank geometry, two things that transfer naturally onto a 45 centimetre square. Our overview of Russian art in the twentieth century gives the context behind those graphic choices.
